When You Were Born

When Mommy & Daddy found out they were expecting you, they were told that September 23 would be the big day.  Mommy was sure that you'd be born earlier.  But you had other plans.

Mommy had her last day of work on September 9.  All her friends at work gave her a great goodbye party.  Once she was all done work, she stayed at home and packed her hospital bag, went for lots of walks with Miley, played lots of video games, and read lots of books so she'd know how to take care of you.

September 23 came and went, and you were still in Mommy's tummy.  A couple of times Mommy thought it was time to have her baby, so she went to the hospital.  The doctors there told her it wasn't time yet, so each time she was sent home!

The morning of September 28, Mommy was sure that it was time to have you.  Mommy & Daddy went to the hospital, but they said it still wasn't time!  Mommy & Daddy left the hospital, and then Daddy got stopped by a police officer for making an illegal u-turn.  Fortunately, the police officer was really nice, so she let them off without a ticket!

Mommy & Daddy went for lunch at a nice restaurant named Doan's.  Daddy told Mommy a really nice story that made Mommy cry.  Mommy will tell you the story once you are older, and you will ask Daddy why he thought it was a good idea to tell Mommy that story when she was so close to having a baby!  After lunch, Mommy & Daddy went to go get dessert (whoopie pies!), and then Mommy went home and took a nap.  Daddy went to Staples and bought a desk chair for the basement.

When Mommy woke up from her nap, her and Daddy went back to the hospital because the doctors had asked them to.  However, you still weren't ready to be born.  So Mommy & Daddy grabbed some dinner (Mary Brown's chicken) and went home yet again.  Since Daddy would have to work in the morning, he went to sleep.

While Daddy was sleeping, Mommy went downstairs so she wouldn't wake him up.  She watched a movie about Japan, and went on the computer to find out why you weren't being born yet, even though she was in a lot of pain!  At about 3:30 in the morning, she realized that it was really time for you to be born!   She woke Daddy up, and they drove very fast to the hospital.  Mommy knew there wasn't much time left - in fact, she thought she was going to give birth to you in the car!

At the hospital, the nurses called Mommy's doctor, and were surprised that Mommy was ready to have you.  After being in the hospital for only about 40 minutes, you were born.  You were born so quickly that Mommy's doctor missed your birth completely!  You can be proud that your Daddy helped bring you into the world.

We decided as soon as you were born that we would name you Madeline Grace.  You were 7 lbs, 10 oz, and 20 inches.  You had SO much hair, and you looked just like Daddy!

Because the nurses had to work on Mommy, you spent the first half hour in your Daddy's arms.  Once Mommy was feeling better, we went to our first hospital room, where we shared a room with a Japanese couple that couldn't speak English with a baby who had jaundice, so the room was lit with a strange blue light.

You slept while we made phone calls and sent texts and emails to our family and friends.  Your Grandma O was so excited that you were born she kept dialing the wrong numbers!  While we were in the hospital we were shown how to bathe you, how to feed you and how to swaddle you (a pointless endeavour, as you hated swaddles after about the first week.) Daddy had to go home for a little bit to take care of Miley, Oscar and Holly, and to get the things we forgot when we rushed to the hospital.

About halfway through our hospital stay we were upgraded to one of the private rooms.  It looked just like a hotel room, with artwork on the walls and all!  We spent most of our time in that room trying to catch up on sleep, and eating gross hospital food!  Even at day one you were a champion sleeper, as you let us sleep for a few hours at a time!

You let us sleep for a few hours, so the next day we were as rested as we could be to take you home. Daddy was so tired the next day, he slept through all the nurses coming to check on us!  We spent most of the day in the hospital, since we were waiting for Mommy's doctor to tell us we could go home.  We were excited when we were told we could go home, and that's when the real fun began!
